Who We Serve

We serve individuals with Maryland Medicaid who identify as men and are interested in breaking the vicious cycle of detox, rehab, relapse. We address the whole person, not just the addiction. Our goal is for our clients to return to their community healthy, resilient, and as productive members of society.

Our Program

The Ranch combines the practical skills-building of a traditional halfway house with certified clinical and behavioral counseling to address the underlying drivers of addictive behaviors and treat the whole person.

Significance of Level 3.1 “Halfway House”

Modern halfway houses provide “low intensity” residential services focused on teaching basic independent living skills. Our combined program requires that each client attend a minimum of 5 mutual aid groups (such as AA or NA, etc.), 5 hours of life skills classes, 4 clinical psychoeducational groups, and 1 clinical substance use disorder counseling session weekly. Our residents benefit from an environment focused on learning recovery and life skills, relapse prevention, emotional coping strategies, and more. We also require that our residents adhere to treatment recommendations of their specialty providers, such as mental health, psychiatry, and primary care.

We treat the whole person, not just the addiction. The Ranch recognizes that many factors can influence an individual’s recovery and quality of life. This is why we utilize a model based upon the “8 Dimensions of Wellness” from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to guide our care. SAMHSA identifies the dimensions of emotional, financial, social, spiritual, occupational, physical, intellectual, and environmental well-being as essential to maintaining wellness and sobriety. We believe that deficits in these areas contribute to an increased likelihood of relapse, and we collaborate with each client to develop an individualized plan of care that addresses any dimensions that are missing or underdeveloped in their own life.

Due to home situations, stressors, and other life events beyond their control, many individuals with long-term substance use disorders did not acquire the skills that their peers absorbed during school, at home, or in the community. The low-intensity structure of ASAM 3.1 “Halfway House” level care provides clients with the opportunity to practice important life skills missed out on when they were younger. Clients explore topics such as taking care of their physical body, self-soothing and emotional regulation, fostering their educational goals, developing marketable job skills, effective social and relational skills, and healthy avenues of leisure and celebration. Additionally, self-exploration and reflection on professions and hobbies they may like to pursue, developing a sense of what their spiritual beliefs may be, and integration of personal values improve the individual's ability to structure and organize the tasks of daily living and recovery.

The Ranch’s overall program combines ASAM Levels 3.1 “Halfway house” and 1.5 “Clinical.” Our certified and accredited Substance Use Disorder counselors use evidence-based practices to address the more subtle aspects of living with a substance use disorder such as triggers, rebuilding families and social support networks, careers, access to entitlements and resources, and overall health and wellness. Upon successful completion of the program, we provide ongoing counseling services and outpatient support groups to further assist our clients in their recovery journey.

The Ranch partners with a variety of resources and other professionals in the region to meet other identified needs of each individual, including transportation, expungement services, social services and entitlements, employment, job training, education, case management, and others.
